We had a short meeting with Markku Jussila, Atso Andersén and myself. Here are the key points from it:
- We have some artificial solutions for surfing already.
- There are two kinds of negative sides in them: they are small and in some cases you are basically in one place just doing tricks.
- For an amateur surfer the main thing is_not_doing some fancy tricks. It is about traveling on the wave and feeling the power it has. This is a big challenge in creating the artificial surfing experience.
- Markku has already thought about this problem with his friends. Their leading plan has been to build something that travels in water just beneath the surface creating suitable wave (upward stream) for surfing.
- Markku's concept allows surfer to travel practically as long as he wants, since the vessel would be maneuverable. It creates waves anywhere, if adequate depth of water is found.
- The key challenge is how to avoid the "cage effect"
This meeting gave me more understanding on what surfing is and what people expect from it. It also provided a new concept for the actual product. The choice between different alternatives will not be easy when looking for the best solution. On the other hand the limitations of this particular project might steer the project into some less optimal direction.
